After my post on Facebook’s demographics and statistics hit the front page of Digg for a day and drove about 25k views of the report, I got the sense that there’s a real need for this kind of information. Aside from Facebook, Twitter is perhaps the most important and interesting social media platform on the web. The following information will give you a good look at Twitter from a demographic perspective:

Given the demographics outlined here, it makes you wonder if Skittles move to employ Twitter was a wise one…are any of their target customers on Twitter? Hard to imagine?

Good post along those lines here: http://bit.ly/81Cqy

Great post… I am amazed as I chat with young people as I am out and about, how many still have not even heard of Twitter… It’s still ground floor. thanks for the great stats

The difference in income is not that significant to make the statement about being Less Affluent. And you have to take into account that they are less people on the higher income brackets in the general population, This is not a good interpretation of statistics.

@kim it’s worth noting that the interpretation of these statistics are not custom created by me, but are produced as summary info from http://www.quantcast.com. Their feedback page is here if you want to give them some: http://www.quantcast.com/docs/display/info/Contact+Us

Peter – so glad that iStrategyLabs was #3 in Google organic listings for “twitter demographics”. Keep up the great work.

This comment is for Peter–do you have more specific demographic info? I’m looking for demographic stats on 18-24 year olds in California that use Twitter. I am an intern for State Farm Insurance and need these demographics for a marketing project. I’d really appreciate any help that you could give me!

@Kayla, I’m not sure of how to find that kind of specific data….if you find a source please let me know. it would be very interesting indeed.

Great Stats. The numbers can be summarized as follows : The average Twitter is a female, caucasian, college student (hence the low age, low income and no kids).

Is there anyway to view demographics for particular twitter accounts? Nice to see facebook has this for their pages.

I think the likeliness of being less afluent statistic does point out something interesting…is that the reason why there are so much affiliate spam on twitter? People struggling to make ends meet pushing products they wouldn’t otherwise have any interest in? Who knows, but what I do know is that there is a lot of that garbage circulating on Twitter and it has become an affiliate marketer(spammer’s) dream. You should be able to find interesting and educational info on Twitter (links to blog articles that actually are worthwhile to read), not useless garbage that nobody really needs to buy, hopefully Twitter’s revised terms of service cuts back the amount of affiliate spam.

When ever I see stats I want to ask what is the methodology? Is this primary research or secondary?

It seems like a great way to meet some young educated ladies with no kids, but an awful place to sell them anything. :-)

This just made me feel like a dumb old rich guy with a bunch of kids.
